Youth Fund: STow Disrupters- Tomato Farm
We recently joined the Stow Disruptors for an inspiring visit to Standhill Tomato Farm, part of a week-long programme of climate action activities for children funded by our Youth Climate Action Fund.
Kerry from Standhill gave us a fantastic tour, showing how a zero-waste ethos is at the heart of everything they do. We started with the cows, where Kerry explained how the farm captures methane from cow slurry. This biogas powers a gas engine, which drives a generator to produce clean, renewable electricity for the farm.
Next, we visited the woodchip boilers, which run on locally sourced waste wood. These boilers provide heat for the glasshouses, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Finally, we stepped inside the warm, light-filled glasshouse to see rows of beautiful, ripening tomatoes , a great example of sustainable food production in action.
It was an amazing project to witness. Both children and adults left feeling inspired by Standhill’s innovation and commitment to sustainable farming.
Thanks Stow Disrupters for having us along, check out their Facebook page for more photos and to see the rest of the amazing activities they have on this week.
