Young Rewilders Visit GlenluDE

Earlier this month, SBCAN had the pleasure of joining the Young Rewilders for an inspiring afternoon at the Glenlude Rewilding Hub — a stunning John Muir Trust estate spanning 149 hectares on the edge of the Southern Uplands, near the Southern Upland Way.

Glenlude is part of an ambitious 20-year rewilding project led by the John Muir Trust. Volunteers are helping to transform this former sheep farm and conifer plantation into a rich mosaic of native habitats, bringing biodiversity back to the landscape.

During our visit, Ellie Oakley, the on-site Conservation Officer for the Trust, shared exciting updates on the restoration progress and offered insights into her own journey from Wildlife Ranger to conservation professional. Her story was both inspiring and informative.

Our group then headed "up the hill" for a spot of bracken bashing — a hands-on task aimed at reducing the dominance of bracken to give other species a better chance to flourish. It was hard work, but also a lot of fun, set against the backdrop of truly beautiful scenery.

Bright Green Nature and the Young Rewilders have an exciting programme of activities lined up in the coming months. If you’d like to get involved — or know someone who might — reach out to Fraser at: fraser@brightgreennature.org
