Climate in Place - Working with the Peebles Place Team

On Tuesday evening we met with members of the Peebles Placemaking Team and Verture's communities' team to understand more about where climate adaption comes into place-making and how the actions set out in the Peebles Place Plan can make for a more climate resilient town.

Peebles Place Plan (PPP) was unveiled earlier this year. The plan lays out the community's aspirations and priorities for how the people of Peebles want the town to develop over the next 20 years. Volunteers from Peebles Community Trust, Peebles Community Council and Peebles Civic Society came together to produce the plan. The PPP is registered under the Local Place Plan regulation and Scottish Borders Council takes it into account as part of planning policy.

Verture is a national organisation supporting climate resilience building across Scotland on behalf of the Scottish Government.

In the first part of the workshop, the team of volunteers from the Peebles Place Making team looked at lived-experience stories from Peebles residents shared on the interactive Climate Stories Map Climate Ready South East Scotland | Commonplace. Following this, they discussed actions within the 'Green and food security' and 'Flood Protection Scheme' initiatives contained in their Place Plan - using Verture's Community Climate Adaptation Routemap - Adaptation Scotland - to consider how these plans support climate adaptation and resilience in Peebles- and the wider area.

SBCAN will continue to work with the place-making team to move forward with an action over the next few months - providing guidance, seed funding and support to connect with other communities taking similar steps- as part of our People & Place work this year.

If your place-team would be interested in similar support to take forward a climate action for improved resilience in your area - please get in touch!
