Rhet at Bonnington with yarrow primary school

RHET Farm Tour – Bonnington Farm

We had the pleasure of tagging along on a school trip with the pupils from Yarrow Primary organised kindly by Royal Highland Education Trust (RHET)

The pupils from Yarrow Primary enjoyed a hands-on learning experience at Bonnington Farm, where they explored key aspects of sustainable and organic farming.

🐓 Chickens and Egg Production

• Children learned about free-range poultry systems and how eggs are produced, collected, and graded.

• The visit highlighted animal welfare, biosecurity, and how local egg production reduces food miles and supports the local economy.

🐑🐄 Organic Sheep and Cattle

• Pupils were introduced to the principles of organic livestock farming, including natural grazing, no artificial inputs, and animal welfare as a top priority.

• They met the farm’s organic sheep and cows, learning how pasture-based systems help improve soil health and promote biodiversity.

🌍 Climate and Environmental Learning

• The visit also introduced pupils to how organic farming supports climate goals by:

• Enhancing carbon sequestration through healthy soils and rotational grazing

• Reducing emissions by eliminating synthetic fertilisers

• Encouraging circular, nature-friendly systems

🌱Where better to learn………

• Where food comes from and how it’s produced

• The role of farms in protecting the environment

• How farmers care for animals and work with nature

The RHET tour gave pupils a memorable, engaging experience that tied food, farming, and the environment together — sparking curiosity and deeper understanding of rural life and sustainability.
