Cheviot Youth visit Berwickshire Marine reserve

One of the organisations funded by SBCAN’s Youth Climate Action Fund this summer was Cheviot Youth. They used the funding for a project centred upon a visit to the Berwickshire Marine Reserve in Eyemouth. This project provided young people from the Kelso and Jedburgh area with the opportunity to learn about the Scottish coastline, its flora and fauna, and the effects that pollution and climate change have on the wildlife of sea and seabed. One of the highlights of the visit was a boat trip from Eyemouth to view the coastline, as well as the many species of birds and wildlife present along that part of the coast.

Cheviot Youth were also really helpful, lending a hand with a litter pick alongside BMR, collecting bags of rubbish, and being educated by BMR about how this affects our oceans and the animals who exist in and around them. The young people saw lots of different marine life whilst rock pooling and learned about how climate change could destroy their habitats.

It wouldn’t be a trip to the seaside without fish and chips and ice cream! As Cheviot Youth tucked into these, from a local shop, they discussed the importance of using as much local produce as possible in their daily lives to reduce their environmental impact.
