Himalayan balsam in an invasive non-native species that out-competes native plant species, particularly on riverbanks. The Tweed Foundation and the Berwick and District Angling Association (BDAA) are working together thanks to funding from Crown Estate Scotland. This project will allow volunteers to start tackling Himalayan balsam plants along the Whiteadder Water, which will help protect the integrity of the riverbank.
This year we will be targeting Allanton bridge, Hutton bridge, and Bluestone ford. For Allanton bridge we will meet at the village hall.
These events are held outside along the riverbank. Volunteers should dress for the weather. We will have a supply of gloves to borrow, or you are welcome to bring your own. We strongly advise you wear long trousers and sleeves and close-toed footwear, as Himalayan balsam often grows amongst nettles. This event will involve pulling Himalayan balsam plants from the ground. They have short roots and are relatively easy to pull.
Tea and coffee will be provided. Please let us know if you will be attending so we can plan accordingly. See ticket link to eventbrite. And do let your friends and family know, the more the merrier.
